The Lord's Prayer: Your will be done    (5/25/2014 )

Part of our daily routine seems to be an effort to stay in control of our lives: our finances, our homes, our relationships, our work situation, our health, and so much more. We hate not being able to control something that’s happening to us — and saying that someone or something is ‘out of control’ is an indicator that something has gone very wrong indeed.

So the last thing any of us wants to do is hand over control of our lives to someone else, right?

Ok, we may hand over parts of our lives, just for a little while. We may trust a surgeon to remove a tumour (because we can’t do it ourselves) and we trust a mechanic to repair our car. But as soon as the job is done, we want to take back control.

After all, I don’t want my surgeon fixing my car, and I certainly don’t want my mechanic performing surgery on me! We carefully choose people to act in specific parts of our lives, based on their skills, their reputation or our experience of them. Usually we meet them first and get a sense of them.

So would you hand over your whole life to someone you’d never even seen? No questions asked? With absolutely no idea of what they plan to do with your life, but knowing they have a history of radical change in people’s lives?

This is what every Christian does. They do it when they become a Christian, and they do it every day that they live as a Christian. This is the amount of trust they have in God; someone they’ve never seen, someone who could ask almost anything of them, but someone to whom they hand over complete control.

Christians do this because they know God’s will is perfect. The Bible says:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

But reading this in a book isn’t the whole story: Christians hand over control every day because they’ve tried it and found it to be the right thing to do. Those who know God know that his plan for them, his control over their lives, is the best thing for them.

That plan, that control, is what we also call ‘God’s will’. It’s what Christians all over the world pray for as part of the Lord’s Prayer, the prayer Jesus himself taught us: “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”.

Handing over control of your life to God may make you feel anxious at first. But as he's your creator, as the person who loves you and cares for you more than anyone, it’s the best thing you could possibly do.

And far from being restricting or painful, it’s also the most liberating thing you could possibly do. Believe me — I’ve done it!

If everyone prayed, “Your will be done”, imagine how the world would be transformed!

Pray: Lord, I try to stay in control because I trust myself - but I know that my skills are limited and I have no idea what the future holds. You know me inside out, you are all-powerful, and you create the future. Help me to understand and accept your perfect will for my life. Amen.

Thank about: What's the worst that could happen, if you gave God control over your life?

Challenge: Will you do it...?
