Just do it    (9/30/2007 )

Just do it, says the sports brand; just go out there and do it (clad from head to toe in their gear, presumably).

You may imagine, this being a Christian website and all, that I'm going to lecture you about the dangers of ‘just doing it'. Perhaps I'm going to warn against all kinds of pleasures and temptations. Not so!

I do think we should ‘just do it'—and so does God.

Of course, the vital thing is that what we do what's best for us: that's what God wants for us, too. Sin is simply stuff that messes us up, both now and for the future. Why don't we embrace the good stuff more often?

Jesus came that we might have life, and have it abundantly (John [NT], chapter 10, verse 10). This means eternal life, with God, in the place and time which the Bible calls ‘heaven'. But it also means right here, right now. Live the life God has given you, as fully as you can! Use the gifts which he has given you (1 Peter [NT] chapter 4, verses 8-10), to enrich your own life and the lives of others.

Don't live vicariously; live abundantly! Are you a couch potato who watches other people play football all the time? Get up and go play football yourself! Who cares if you're not premiership standard? You'll develop a skill, get some exercise, make some friends. Just do it!

In the same way, don't get bogged down in the drudgery of everyday life. The ironing needs doing, and that dripping tap needs fixing. But we also need to live! If you've always wanted to learn Italian, the piano, or how to do watercolour painting, just do it!

When you see someone sitting on a park bench, in tears, and feel afraid to ask if they're OK—just do it. You could be the person who makes all the difference. When someone's car has broken down, just do it: roll down your window and ask if they need you to make a call on their behalf. When you see an old lady in the supermarket trying to reach something on a high shelf, just do it: reach up for her. When you see a beggar in the street but feel too embarrassed to buy them a sandwich, just do it. See what Jesus' brother has to say about this in James (NT) chapter 2, verses 8 and 16.

Do it out of joy, and a zest for life (1 Thessalonians [NT], chapter 5, verses 15-17). Do these things because Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love him, and the second greatest is to love one another. (Matthew [NT] chapter 22, verses 37-39).

If you've ever wondered about doing voluntary work, just do it. If you feel stuck in a rut and would love a change of career, just do it. Pray about all these things (Matthew [NT], chapter 7, verse 7), and God will be beside you all the way, guiding and helping you. (Matthew [NT], chapter 28, verse 20).

A good parent wants the greatest happiness and the best opportunities for their child, and that's exactly what God want for you. As Jesus himself said, "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then... know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matthew [NT], chapter 7, verses 9-11).

Pray: God, life on earth is short! Too short. I want to seize all the opportunities you're offering me, for this life and the next. Thank you for all the gifts you give me, and help me to use them. Show me how to have life in abundance. Amen.

Think about: What's stopping you from getting the most out of life? And what's stopping you from getting good with God? Isn't it possible that the latter could help you with the former?

Challenge: This week, decide on something you've always wanted to do, however small or life-changingly big. Talk to God about it. Ask him to show you whether that's in his plan for you, and whether he'll help you with it. Wait on God; the answer will come. It may not be this week, but it will come!
