I was almost enjoying the grilling too much to listen to what was being said this morning as I heard some peer describing his recommendations that young adults should have a ceremony at which they take up the responsibilities of adult members of society.
I actually think there is much wisdom here. I believe we think too much about rights and not enough about responsibilities. We need to redress the balance without swinging hte pendulum just as far the other way. I also believe in ceremonies. They are an important part of the psycology (and probably spirituality) of being human, I think.
However, it was the idea of an oath of allegiance that intrigued me. What would that look like if we took one to God? And would we keep it?
