Dangerous ground, perhaps, but how can I not comment on the imprisonment of Mrs Gillian Gibbons for allowing her pupils to name a teddy after one of their number and by the same name as the prophet of Islam? I wonder what would happen if we imprisoned everyone in the UK who misused the name of Jesus, or who used the word "God" in a disrespectful way. There would be fewer traffic jams for me to stuck in anyway!
However, this is not actually what this story says to me. I do believe that this was an innocent mistake and the punishment was far too severe, but I also think that we have something to learn about the respect we offer to the things that are important to us, particularly to our faith.
I don't want to follow an islamic line; it is important that we realise we live by God's grace not as those condemned by his law, however in the west we can go too far the other way. Whom do we worship? God all-matey, or God almighty?
