Looking at the news and wondering what it all means

How green?

Apparently the Tory party are suggesting charging us to park at out of town shopping centres and supermarkets. The idea is that if they charge for parking there it will encourage people to shop in town centres, and the money raised from those who do use the car parks can be spent on environmentally friendly alternatives to driving the car.

This idea has raised the inevitable furore. "How can I travel back from the supermarket with 23 bags of shopping? Do these politicians live in the real world?" and so on... But I say "good for them"!

We have a responsibility to look after the planet; God gave us the job and we aren't doing a very good job at it. Governments should be prepared to make the hard decisions. We accept the fact that we have to pay to park elsewhere, why not at shopping centres? Many people get their shopping delivered anyway (although when we tried it the bloke had to come back twice because he had forgotten to give us everything, and then we got fed up with our neighbours calling us posh for having our shopping brought to us, so we stopped).

We ought to be bolder, there is a job to be done, and I have some other ideas.

I think we should force all freight to go by rail or canal. Every time I drive down any motorway there are hundreds of lorries clogging it up. Limit lorry journeys to 25 miles and we'ld save the planet, empty our roads, and invest in a green transport system that passengers could use too.

I also think that we should either have four-wheeled motorbikes, like quad-bikes, for the road, or we should encourage motorbike use. Four-wheelers could have roofs (like that weird BMW bike already has) to keep us dry and they would be nippy, economical, and take up very little space in towns, both driving and parking. And don't think I am just thinking of the fun that I can have; a quad-scooter could be ridden/driven in a skirt and if they had roofs you wouldn't need a helmet to mess up your hair either.

There are lots of things that we could do to save the planet - leave a comment and tell me what you would do, and then maybe we'll send our contribution to the politicians!

It's time we got a bit radical about this planet that God has given us - what do you reckon?

I'm really glad to see they're thinking of putting a £2k purchase tax on big 4x4s - and letting people who drive ultra-efficient Smart cars etc to reclaim £2k off their purchase price!

In an ideal world (or to get to one), I wish no one was allowed to have a car over 1.5L. It's not just the gas, it's all the arrogance, speeding and bad driving that goes with lots of other big and expensive cars. I've just renewed the car tax for my own 1.5L diesel and I'm delighted its only £35 PER YEAR!

I live in the middle of nowhere, with rough roads, and have a 4X4. This is not a luxury but rather a work tool. This tax has hit farmers hard. There should be a postcode thing for taxing 4X4s in town but not where they are needed for work and safety.
